METAL at Purdue

M.E.T.A.L. at Purdue is a project at Purdue University that focuses on the technical aspects of musical acoustics in guitars. METAL is an acronym for Mechanical Engineering Technology Acoustics Lab. In the project, undergraduate students in the department of Mechanical Engineering Technology build their own guitar.

Designs

There are five different guitar designs built in METAL, the Classical – M1, the Auditorium – M2, the Archtop – M3, the Travel – M4, and the Solid Body – M5.

Guitar Workshop

The guitar workshop is a one week course held at Purdue’s main campus in West Lafayette, IN that anyone can attend by registering at their online site. The course teaches the technical aspects of designing and building guitars by having each student build their own electric guitar throughout the course.

Funding

The project is funded mostly through Purdue University; however, they have received donations from companies like Taylor Guitars and Bellingers.
