Parliamentary dissolution power of Latvian President

Parliamentary dissolution power of Latvian President

If the President of Latvia decides to dissolve the Saeima (parliament), the Constitution calls for a referendum to be held immediately. If the referendum passes, the current Saeima's term ends and elections for a new one will be held; if the referendum fails, the President is stripped of his office.

This power has never been used by the President of Latvia. The only dissolution of Saiema took place in 1934, when Prime Minister Kārlis Ulmanis illegally dissolved the parliament and established an authoritarian regime.
