The York Cold War Bunker is a two-storey semi-subterranean bunker in the Holgate area of York, England, built in 1961 [ [http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/search/display.var.1596190.0.cold_war_bunker_holgate_york.php "Cold War bunker, Holgate, York"] , The Press (4 August 2007), retrieved on 22 September 2007] during the cold war to monitor nuclear explosions and fallout in Yorkshire in the event of nuclear war. It was used by the Royal Observer Corps as a headquarters between 1961 and 1991. The attraction is only accessible by tour and includes a video about nuclear war which had to be cut for being too graphic.
