The York Cold War Bunker is a two-storey semi-subterranean bunker in the Holgate area of York, England, built in 1961 [ [http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/search/display.var.1596190.0.cold_war_bunker_holgate_york.php "Cold War bunker, Holgate, York"] , The Press (4 August 2007), retrieved on 22 September 2007] during the cold war to monitor nuclear explosions and fallout in Yorkshire in the event of nuclear war. It was used by the Royal Observer Corps as a headquarters between 1961 and 1991. It is an English Scheduled Monument [ [http://pastscape.english-heritage.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=1310348&type=&class1=Defence&period=Modern&county=None&place=york&yearfrom=ALL&yearto=ALL&recordsperpage=5&source=text&sort=1&nmr=&defra=&p=1 "NO 20 GROUP ROYAL OBSERVER CORPS HEADQUARTERS"] , English Heritage Pastscapes (2007), retrieved on 22 September 2007] and was opened in 2006 by English Heritage as a tourist attraction.

The attraction is only accessible by tour and includes a video about nuclear war which had to be cut for being too graphic.
