History

Chuvash statehood starts when Suvas Spirit appeared. As a result of merging between 2 closely akin tribes, Volga Bulgars and Suvars, as well as some other (Esegel, Barsil, Biljar, Mari , Burtas etc) into one mighty state - Volga Bulgaria.

In 1236 AD Volga Bulgaria was conquered by the Tataro-Mongols. Due to war and 1239-1241 revolutions against Kypchak-tatars Volga Bulgaria population deeply felt down and main aristokrat and economic classes were killed or dissipated. This war's major massacres had occurred (see Siege of Bilär), and later, the raids of the nomads and inner wars within the Golden Horde led to decline of the agriculture and depopulation of the Southern steppes of the Volga Bulgaria. The Bulgars resettled to the north and west of the country, forgot Muslim and finally became pagan Chuvashes, keeping the Bolgar language. Kypchaks and small part of Bulgars formed Muslim state of Volga Tatars to the south from Chuvashes, adopted language of the Kypchaks. Due to war between Tatars and uzbek Tamerlan in 1360-1395 years, central and southern Bulgaria finally became a population dessert. After this war and blood massacres of Tamerlan troops Bulgaria finally became Tatar state. In 1445 the Khanate of Kazan was established by Mäxmüd, but the elite had the Hordian roots or was Tatarized and the Muslim Bolgar population, forming the Kazan Tatars, played the main role, whereas the Chuvash people were out of rule. Modern Tatar scholars believe that the statehood of the Volga Bulgaria was restored as Kazan khanate, but Chuvash scholars are strongly oppose.

After the fall of Kazan the feudals of Chuvashia, forming a major part of the Taw yağı, controlled their land for some years durning the Kazan War.

During the Tatar attempt to establish Idel-Ural State, panuralists planned to incorporate Chuvashia as a part of Idel-Ural. Those plans weren't realized.

Chuvash statehood was renewed on 24 June 1920 when Chuvash Autonomous Oblast appeared on political map of Russia. On 21 April 1925 it was renamed into Chuvash Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ChuvASSR).

19 October 1990 ChuvASSR was transformed into Chuvash Soviet Socialist Republic. Supreme Council of Chuvashia adopted «The Declaration of State Sovereignty». 13 February 1992 ChuvSSR became Chuvash Republic.
