Giordano Bobone Orsini

Giordano Bobone Orsini

Jordan or Giordano Bobone Orsini (died 1165 or 1159 [First date is according to the catalog of the occupants of the "titulus" S. Susanna ( [http://www.fiu.edu/~mirandas/titles-4.htm#Susanna The Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church: Titulus S. Susanna] ). The second is according to "Bulletin de la Société Académique de Laon", Éd. Fleury et Ad. Chevergny, 1864, p. 251. The second date seems to be more likely because cardinal Giordano is not listed among participants of the papal election, 1159 (S. Miranda [http://www.fiu.edu/~mirandas/conclave-xii.htm#1159 papal election of September 1159] ) and did not subscribe any papal bulls issued after April 25, 1154.] ) - was a Carthusian monk and Cardinal Priest of Santa Susanna, created by Pope Eugene III in 1145. He was a member of the Roman family of the Orsini. He served as Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church under Pope Eugene III. He subscribed the papal bulls between December 31, 1145 and April 25, 1154 [Jaffé Philipp (1819-1870) [http://www.wbc.poznan.pl/dlibra/docmetadata?id=70317&from=&dirids=1 Regesta pontificum Romanorum ab condita Ecclesia ad annum post Christum natum MCXCVIII] , Berlin 1851, p. 616 and 653] .

He was described by John of Salisbury as mean and parsimonious and dressing in filthy rags as a gesture of austerity. When he was sent with Octavian of Santa Cecilia as a papal legate to summon Conrad III of Germany to Italy to be crowned Holy Roman Emperor, he quarrelled with his co-legate and, in the words of Salisbury, "made the Church a laughingstock." [Norwich, 149–150 and note.]

He participated in the papal election, 1153 [S. Miranda: [http://www.fiu.edu/~mirandas/conclave-xii.htm#1153 papal election, 1153] ] and papal election, 1154 [S. Miranda [http://www.fiu.edu/~mirandas/conclave-xii.htm#1154 papal election, 1154] ] .
