(Elsayid) Ahmed Al-Mirghani ( _ar. أحمد الميرغني, born 16 August, 1941), is the scion of the venerated Mirghani family of Sudan and the great-great grandson of Al Sayyid Muhammad Othman AlMirghani AlKhatim. He was the President of Sudan from May 6, 1986 to June 30, 1989, when the democratically elected government was toppled by a military coup led by the current President Omar al-Bashir. He graduated with a First class degree from the University of London and become prominent after the handing over of the transitional government of Abdel Rahman Swar al-Dahab to civilian rule.

Peace agreement

Among his governments achievements was the historic Peace agreement of November 1988 brokered by the DUP and the SPLM in Addis Abbaba. The whole nation was in support of the peace agreement except the current National (Islamist) Front led by Hassan ElTurabi. Sudan enjoyed strong foreign relations with the outside world and was seriously heading towards a rebuilding of the society and government systems following the 16 years of dictatorship by Jafar Elnumeiri.
