Tripuraneni Gopichand

Tripuraneni Gopichand (1910-1962) was a Telugu short story writer, novelist, editor, essayist, playwright and film director. Gopichand's writings are remarkable for interplay of values, ideas and 'isms' - materialism, rationalism, existentialism, realism and humanism.

He is celebrated for his second novel ‘Asamardhuni Jeevayatra’ (The Incompetent's Life Journey). This is the first psychological novel in Telugu literature.

In Andhra Pradesh the rationalist movement and social reform were spearheaded by the late Kaviraju Tripuraneni Ramaswami Chowdary ( b. 15-01-1887; d. 1943) he was a Bar-at-Law and a great Telugu essayist, dramatist and epic writer. He wanted to bring up the non-Brahmin castes to a cultured and accomplishing level through education and the spread of rationalism so that superstitious and anti-social practices could be given up. He was a contemporary of the founder of the Dravidian movement Sri E V Ramaswamy Naicker . He was also a leading light in the Justice Party, not in politics but in their social reform movements . His contribution to the social awakening and the inspiring poems that he wrote greeting the freedom fighters were recognized by the Government of India. In 1987 a stamp commemorating him had been released in Delhi by the then President of India Sardar Jail Singh.

One of Sri Ramaswamy Chowdary’s sons, the late Sri T.Gopi Chand (1910-1962). excelled his father not in social reform movements but as a rationalist and humanist and a great story and novel writer. The illustrious among his works are:

He was a great writer of scripts for films and also producer and Directed of films the most noted among them was Lakshmamma ( the story of a great pious Telugu lady)

Through his stories and novels and literary criticisms he set the people of Andhra Pradesh on the path of what now has come to be known as progressive literature and he was not a little instrumental in the birth of the Progressive Writers Association in Andhra Pradesh. From pure rationalism to humanism of the late M. N. Roy, he evolved into integral humanism of Sri Arbindo. His evolution and ideas and world view are reflected in his later writings.

He was engaged by the All India Radio to conduct a series of programs for the enlightenment of ordinary citizens. On the formation of Andhra Pradesh, he was specially appointed as the Director of Public Information and Public Relations. He died very young at 52 age.

One of his Grand sons Kamal Tripuraneni is a scholar..PHD from Cambridge,UK. Kamal Tripuraneni was honoured with prestigious space science international award 'ROBERT A HEINLEIN FLIGHT IN TO THE FUTURE CONTEST' for his project on INDUSTRIAL EXTRACTION OF OXYGEN FROM THE LUNAR SOIL TO COMMERCIALISE SPACE TRAVEL on the subject " A GREAT VIBILITY OF SPACE TRAVEL BY LUNAR GENERATION OF OXYGEN VIA THE FFC CAMBRIDGE PROCESS".
