These are the official results of the men's high jump event at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Twenty-eight contestants met on the morning of the first day of the athletic contests, on Friday November 23, 1956, and 22 cleared the qualifying height of 1.92 metres, to meet again in the afternoon.
The finalists all cleared a height of 1.86 metres, but three failed at 1.92 which they had cleared in the morning. Three more failed at 1.96 which was the highest jump for six other competitors. The field was reduced to ten competitors, half of whom failed above 2.00 metres and with five left, the contest began in earnest.
