Wendelsheim is a local municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is located in the heart of Germany's largest winegrowing area Rheinhessen, 10 kilometers to the west of Alzey. The village is surrounded by two brooks what fostered the settlement of several water mills in the late Middle Ages. Viniculture is still an important economic sector nowadays.

History

As "Wenilsheim" it was documented for the first time in 766 in the Lorsch Codex. Though celtic vestiges indicate a considerably anterior cultural history.

In the Middle Ages Wendelsheim was intermittently reigned by the lords of Calw and a nobility called "Wildgrafen" (Deerlords).

During the German Mediatisation the enire district was assigned to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. After the Second World War Wendelsheim was finally reassigned to the newly created federal state rhineland palatinate

Coat of arms

The arms show the lion of the so-called Wildgrafen counts, and The silver bar of the Rheingrafen counts. The two salmon are canting for the Counts of Salm, who were the last Lords of Wendelsheim and successors of the two other dynasties. The arms first appeared on the local seal of 1775. The two blue stripes in the upper left corner are also said to symbolise the two brooks Wiesbach and Finkenbach, that encircle the village of Wendelsheim.
