Battalion 316 (Honduras)

Battalion 316 was a Honduran army unit responsible for carrying out hundreds of political assassinations and widespread torture of suspected political opponents of the government during the 1980s. Battalion members received extensive training and support from the United States Central Intelligence Agency both in Honduras and at U.S. military bases [http://www.baltimoresun.com/bal-negroponte1a,0,1240201.story??track=sto-relcon] , as well as from Alfredo Mario Mingolla and other members of the Argentine Batallion 601 (including Ciga Correa, who had collaborated with the Chilean DINA in assassinating General Carlos Prats and had trained, along with Seineldín, the AAA Equipo Nizkor, [http://www.margen.org/articu/nizkor1.html LA APARICION DE OSAMENTAS EN UNA ANTIGUA BASE MILITAR DE LA CIA EN HONDURAS REABRE LA PARTICIPACION ARGENTINO-NORTEAMERICANA EN ESE PAIS.] , "Margen" es icon] . The Batallion 316 was also trained by Pinochet's Chile .

Colonel Alvarez Martínez, of the Batallion 316, had studied at the Argentine Military College, graduating in 1961 . End of 1981, more than 150 Argentine officers were in Honduras . This training operation took the code-name of Operation Charly. One of the training base used was in Lepaterique, and the other in Quilalí . CIA took the Argentine's place after the Falkland War, although Argentine officers remained active in Honduras until 1984-1986 .

The Argentine ESMA Navy also sent instructors to Honduras, among whom Roberto Alfieri González,who served in the National Guard of El Salvador, as well as in Guatemala and Honduras .
