|BBC Select was a TV channel which broadcast during the hours when BBC1 or BBC2 were not broadcasting (Usually between 2am and 6am)
The service was intended for specialist audiences (For example nurses, lawyers and teachers). Certain programmes required a subscription, and required equipment to decode the signal known as a BBC Selector.
Subscription
To be able to watch an encrypted programme, a
Set Top Box called the BBC Selector, paired up with a BBC Select Viewing Card, was required. This would be able to decode the signals broadcast. The scrambling system used was called "VideoCrypt 'S' "The system was very similar to whatBritish Sky Broadcasting were using for their analoguesatellite transmissions, but was modified due to technical limitations of terrestrial TV.
