On April 12, 2007, an explosion occurred in a café inside the Iraqi parliament building, located in the heavily fortified Green Zone of Baghdad. The blast happened ten minutes after the Council of Representatives had adjourned for lunch, and is thought to have been caused by a suicide bomber.

Fatalities

Early reports indicated that 8 people were killed, and at least 23 people were reported wounded. Supposedly among the dead were two Sunni Iraqi parliamentarians; Mohammed Awad, a political party member of the Iraqi National Dialogue Council, and Taha al-Liheibi, a political party member of the Iraqi Accordance Front.

On April 13, the US military reported that only one person, Mohammed Awad, was killed, and that 22 others were wounded. [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6550923.stm]

Responsibility

Current suspicions are directed at the bomber having been the bodyguard of one of the deceased lawmakers. [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/6550923.stm]

On April 13, the insurgent group Islamic State in Iraq posted a message on an Islamist website claiming to have sent "A knight from the state of Islam... [into] the heart of the Green Zone" to carry out the attack. It is not clear whether this claim is genuine, though some who monitor such websites believe it is. Reactions

On April 13, the Iraqi Council of Representatives held an emergency assembly in response to the bombing, to show resilience in the face of such attacks.

President George W. Bush of the United States issued a press release on the day of the bombing, in which he strongly condemned the attacks and said, "It reminds us, though, that there is an enemy willing to bomb innocent people and a symbol of democracy".

On April 16, cabinet members, who belonged to the Mahdi Army and held three ministries, quit the government, in response to growing insecurity in Baghdad and the refusal of al-Maliki's government to set a timetable for the American military withdrawal.
