Simon is a graduate of
Dana College inBlair, Nebraska , andConcordia Seminary inSt. Louis, Missouri . He is ordained in theLutheran Church and his brother is the lateUnited States Senator Paul Simon ofIllinois . He pastored Trinity Lutheran Church onNew York ’s densely populated, low-income Lower East Side from 1961 to 1972. Before retiring, he directed the Washington Office of theChristian Children's Fund from 1992 to 1997.Simon's book, "Bread for the World", won the national Religious Book Award, and was described by the late
Nobel Prize economist,Gunnar Myrdal , as a "clear and convincing" analysis of world hunger. His most recent book (with David Beckmann) is "Grace at the Table: Ending Hunger in God’s World". His previous books have discussedhunger ,Christian faith ,poverty andpublic policy . He has also had articles published in many nationalnewspaper s andjournal s.
