After their defeat at theFirst Battle of Al-Faw two years earlier, the newly restructured Iraqi Army conducted a major operation to clear the Iranians out of the peninsula. The Iraqis concentrated well over 100,000 troops from the battle-hardenedRepublican Guard versus 15,000 second-rate IranianBasij volunteers. By employing the use of massive artillery barrages, air bombardments, and extensive amounts ofchemical weapons , the Iraqis eventually expelled the Iranians from al-Faw within thirty-five hours, with much of their equipment captured intact.ee also
