Motorcycle tankbag

Motorcycle tankbags are portable storage containers that rest on top of a motorcycle's fuel tank. These bags come in many sizes and configurations and are often constructed of a durable, flexible, textile material.

Some of these bags come with a rain cover, and others have optional rain covers that may be purchased. A common feature of a tankbag is a see-through pouch, which allows the rider to display a map, or a portion of a map, on the top of the tankbag. Many tankbags have magnetic mounting hardware, which makes them easy to attach and detach from the motorcycle. However, not all motorcycle fuel tanks are steel. Some tanks are aluminum or use some other composite material. Other tanks are plastic. Hence, for these latter motorcycle tanks, a strap-on design is required. Some manufacturers provide their tankbags with both strap-on as well as magnetic attaching systems. Other tankbags have only one or the other attachment option available.

A number of tankbags are expandable. Merely zipping open a pleat can allow for a few more inches of storage space. On other models, complete tankbag sections can be zipped on and off to accommodate different rider storage requirements.

Pockets are another common feature on tankbags. Some models have pockets on the inside and the outside for segregating various rider travel items.

Many tankbags have handles that allow for easy transport away from the motorcycle. Some also have a single, over-the-shoulder strap for carrying convenience. And some may have a dual, shoulder-strap system, so that the tankbag can be transported away from the motorcycle in much the same way a hiker would carry a backpack.

Tankbags are a simple way to add additional storage space to a motorcycle. A drawback is that they may scratch the paint of the motorcycle's fuel tank. Although most tankbags have some kind of soft material that makes contact with the paint, in the normal operation of attaching and detaching the bag, small amounts of dirt, sand or other abrasive material may find its way in between the tank bag and fuel tank, resulting in minor paint scratches or scuffing.

For those that do not want the bulk of a regular tankbag, a magnetic tank map holder is another option due to their slimness. [ [http://www.webbikeworld.com/r4/motorcycle-map-holder/roadgear-tank-map-holder.htm RoadGear Magnetic Tank Map Holder Review] ]

The tankbag is a very convenient place to store small or soft items a rider may wish to have ready access to, for example, maps, extra gloves, sunglasses, earplugs, hat, t-shirt, snacks, etc. However, a rider should be cautious about storing certain items that could pose an additional threat to rider safety in the event of a mishap. Items to avoid storing in a tankbag include tools, heavy objects, sharp items or anything a rider would not want immediately forward in the event of a frontal collision. An additional storage consideration for those using "magnetic" tankbags is to avoid storing cameras, film, digital media, or anything susceptible to magnetic damage or magnetic corruption.
