Old jock radio

Old Jock Radio is a deeply popular independent internet radio station based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The station enjoys a cult following mainly due to the popularity of it’s fictional presenter “Les Bell” and his many varied contributors from the odd side of life. The programming on Old Jock Radio is broadcast live and chat based but occasionally delves into the world of popular music.OJR, the brainchild of Pete Rankin and a few friends, began broadcasting live on the internet in 2004 and has a dedicated army of fans, many of whom can be seen at various gigs and festivals in Scotland wearing OJR non-profit merchandise like a badge of honour. Pete Rankin, while some would say he is a man of mystery and talents, is also known for directing the Beta Band documentary “Let It Beta” and playing bass guitar for the pop group King Biscuit Time (musician). Other film works by Pete Rankin's 'Maskin Films' can be seen on the OJR website & myspace: 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' was shown at the Leith Film Festival under the comedy banner, the ongoing 'Weirds Way', a comedic homage to Tom Weir and his travels around Scotland starring Dod Bell, and 'Les Bell's Wonderful Christmas' which featured the acting debut of OJR listener Godgie Boy.

The show is largely talk based as it gives listeners the opportunity to chew the fat over the week’s news and anything you wanna get off your chest with hilarious results via the interaction of MSN messenger and also features home grown Scottish bands, live music sessions, a diverse selection of co-host / guests, comedy sketches, Old Jock Radio news, ten seconds of silence, crap shop and various other comedy segments that make the show a joyous two hours of entertainment. As befits a show emanating from "the stool-stained streets of old Broughton" there are occasional scatalogical references and regular use of profane Caledonian vernacular.

Co-hosts include Les' brother Dod, Steve Mason, Pip Dylan, Richard Bray, Twig, Spazzy Bystander, and Colin Emmanuel aka C-Swing. Keeping goal at the back - Frankfurt Scotty and Joanne.

There has never a programme where the listeners have the opportunity to mould the direction of the show with out the quality dropping through the floor, I have no doubt that if you give the show a listen you will find it is quite the opposite!!! On air 9-11 every Thursday, and available to listen again if someone remembers to record it.

OJR is known for it's extravagant and promptly-delivered prizes. These have included a one-off OJR welcome mat, tickets for The Wickerman Festival, a Gareth Gates DVD, and a smoked sausage. The most recent prize was a listeners very own jingle - won by Panda.

Segments have included surreal comedy sketches from Blab, 'Crap Shop', '10 seconds of silence', 'Jaffa Cake Challenge' and other interesting pieces of listening.

From Gourock, Scotland to Toronto, Canada the Old Jock Radio show has developed a very devoted cult fanbase that tune in every single week. With a very much Listener based format it has without doubt captured a niche on the airwaves that becomes quite addictive after a short period. My Thursday night would be empty and lonely without my weekly dose of OJR.
