Galway, having no competition in the Connacht Championship, played the Ulster champions in an All-Ireland quarter-final. The winner of this game later played the Leinster champions in an All-Ireland semi-final.
All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Paths to the final
The Munster Championship proved to be a complete walkover for Cork. In the Munster final they defeated Waterford on a huge score line of 5-31 to 3-6. It was their first provincial title since 1979. In the Leinster Championship Kilkenny broke the dominance of Wexfod and Offaly to win their first provincial title since 1979 also.

The final
Sunday,
September 14 was the date of the 1982 All-Ireland final between Cork and Kilkenny. It was the sides first meeting in the final since 1978, when Cork captured the three-in-a-row. Cork, who had played so well in the provincial series of games en route, were installed as firm favourites. The tag of underdogs, however, did not sit well with Kilkenny and they played like men inspired from the throw-in. Just before half-time Kilkenny’sChrity Heffernan scored two goals within one minute to give ‘the Cats’ a huge confidence boost. The fact that it was only his third ever championship appearance certainly seemed to demoralise Cork even more. At the interval the score was Kilkenny 2-11, Cork 0-7.In the second-half Cork tried to fight back, however, Kilkenny’s
Noel Skehan was unbeatable as goalkeeper.Ger Fennelly captured Kilkenny’s third goal eight minutes into the second-half and the game was all but over for Cork. What had previously been regarded as no more than a moderately-good Kilkenny team certainly proved themselves against Cork. The final score was Kilkenny 3-18, Cork 1-15.Results
