Baucom was hired as VMI coach following the 2004–05 season. He was previously the head coach at NCAA Division II Tusculum College. Before becoming Tusculum's head coach, Baucom served an assistant at Davidson, Western Carolina and Northwestern State. He graduated from UNC Charlotte in 1995. His career record is 87-94 in Division I and 37–19 in Division II.
2010-11 marked the fifth consecutive season that VMI led Div.-1 in team scoring per game.
On July 18, 2011, Baucom was signed to a contract extension through the 2015 season.
