Hilary Bradt

Hilary Bradt MBE (born 1941) is the founder and namesake of the Bradt travel guidebook series, which became an increasingly visible voice in the travel guidebook world starting in the 1990s.

Like many guidebook series, the Bradt guides began by covering exotic or off-beat destinations, such as Rwanda and Albania. The series had a low editorial budget, used simple layout, and presented information densely with few photographs. By 2007, the series had grown and become slightly more mainstream, but still specialized in less popular destinations that were not high priority for the largest guidebook series. The Bradt books have won a number of awards. The series is based in Chalfont St Peter, England.

Hilary Bradt worked as a tour leader before beginning to write guidebooks. Her area of special expertise is Madagascar and she has written several books on this African island nationcite book | author = Hilary Bradt | url = http://www.bradt-travelguides.com/details.asp?prodid=119 | title = Madagascar travel guide | edition = 9th ed | publisher = Bradt Travel Guides | year = 2007] cite book | author = Nick Garbutt, Hilary Bradt and Derek Schuurman | url = http://www.bradt-travelguides.com/details.asp?prodid=28 | title = Madagascar Wildlife guide | edition = 2nd ed | publisher = Bradt Travel Guides | year = 2001] .

She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours. [LondonGazette |issue=58729 |date=14 June 2008 |startpage=14 |supp=yes |notarchive=yes]
