The surname, "MacAuley", can be derived from two different names.

*Scottish origin (from Dunbartonshire; see Clan MacAulay), and Irish origin (from County Westmeath). The name is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic "Mac Amhalghaidh", a personal name of uncertain origin.

*Scottish origin (from the Hebrides; see MacAulays of Lewis), and Irish origin (from County Fermanagh). The name is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic "Mac Amhlaoibh" or "Mac Amhlaidh", meaning "son of Olaf". These Gaelic names derive from the Old Norse personal names "Áleifr" and "Óláfr".
