Heptapteridae is a family of catfish that originate from Mexico to South America.cite book | title = Fishes of the World | last = Nelson | first = Joseph, S. | publisher = John Wiley & Sons, Inc. | year = 2006 | ISBN = 0471250317] Heptapteridae is derived from Greek, "hepta" meaning seven and "pteron" meaning fin.FishBase family | family = Heptapteridae | year = 2007 | month = Apr]

The diversity of this family is poorly known and there are many species yet to be described. So far some 190 species have been described. This family is equivalent to the previously recognized Rhamdiinae, a subfamily of the family Pimelodidae. However, molecular evidence shows that this family is a part of the superfamily Pimelodoidea along with Pimelodidae, Pseudopimelodidae, and "Conorhynchos".cite journal|journal=Mol Phylogenet Evol.|year=2006|volume=41|issue=3|pages=636–62|title=A phylogenetic analysis of the major groups of catfishes (Teleostei: Siluriformes) using rag1 and rag2 nuclear gene sequences|last=Sullivan|first=JP|coauthors=Lundberg JG; Hardman M|doi=10.1016/j.ympev.2006.05.044]

The skin of these fish is usually naked (scaleless). They exhibit three pairs of barbels. They have a large adipose fin, and their caudal fin is deeply forked. However, there are no external characteristics that are unique to this family that allow it to be differentiated from Pimelodidae.

Heptapteridae includes a few troglobitic species in the genera "Pimelodella", "Rhamdia", and "Taunayia", as well as in an undescribed genus.cite journal|journal=Neotropical Ichthyology|volume=3|issue=4|pages=587-595|year=2005|title=A new cave species of "Rhamdia" (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) from Serra do Ramalho, northeastern Brazil, with notes on ecology and behavior|first=Maria Elina|last=Bichuette|coauthors=Trajano, Eleonora]
