college radio station inColchester, Vermont owned bySaint Michael's College , broadcasting on the 88.7 FM frequency. The station is nicknamed "The Mike". It is operated via partnership withVermont Public Radio , who provide the station withBBC World Service content when community shows are not airing (mostly in the late-night/early morning hours, and between 4 and 5 PM weekdays). The station allows any student, faculty, or staff member of SMC to be a DJ. Some members of the Colchester/Burlington community have their own shows as well. WWPV isfreeform in nature, playing many musical genres, includingclassical music ,country music , andalternative rock . The station is also responsible for musical happenings around campus, such as DJing special events. In 2007 the station broughtZox to play a show on campus that was free to students, and in April 2008 they put on another free concert featuringState Radio . They have done on-air interviews with many bands, including theDropkick Murphys ,New Found Glory , andThe Early November .In the Spring of 2007 the station attracted attention when Vermont Public Radio approached the college's president and board of trustees with an interest in purchasing the frequency to turn it into a 24-hour classical station. [http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070309/NEWS01/703090315/1009] After word of this potential sale became public in the "
Burlington Free Press " and the SMC online magazine, "The Echo", SMC students, faculty, and staff rallied against the sale. Numerous letters were written to the "Free Press", [http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070317/OPINION/703170316/1006] , posters were put up around campus, and a largeFacebook group was created to mobilize students. Because of the outcry, then-president Marc vanderHeyden recommended to the board that the station not be sold, effectively ending the possibility of a deal. [http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070322/BUSINESS/703220313/1003] Vermont Public Radio instead bought 90.9 FM, now known asWOXR , to run the classical format. In the Fall of 2007 the station won a nationwide college/university contest through the independent music affiliate
Mytracks.com winning $5,000. The station beat out prestigious large universities such as Ole Miss, Michigan State, and Kentucky. With their winnings, they broughtState Radio to the college to perform a concert Saturday, April 26.References
