Top hat (lighting)

Top hat (lighting)

A tophat is a device used in theatrical lighting to shield the audience's eyes from the direct source of the light. It is shaped like a top hat with a hole in the top, with the brim attached to the end of the lighting instrument. The cylinder allows light to pass through but takes away the glint of a lighting instrument facing the audience. There are also half-hats, which function in a similar manner, but have only half the cylinder.
