Ma Zhong was a general serving under Liu Zhang, who later served Sun Quan. In the historical novel of the era, the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", he managed to capture Guan Yu of Shu Han in the battle for Jingzhou (荆州).

After hearing that Liu Bei, the Emperor of Shu, was attacking Wu in order to avenge Guan Yu, Ma Zhong began getting his troops ready for the battle with Liu Bei. However, he was killed by the traitors Mi Fang and Fu Shiren who wanted to use his head as a tribute to rejoin Shu. He killed the great general Huang Zhong with an arrow.

The novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" states that after Guan Yu was killed by Sun Quan, Ma Zhong was awarded Lu Bu's legendary horse Red Hare for his deeds in the battle. However, because Red Hare had been tamed by Guan Yu, he refused to eat and followed his former master in death.
