notes=Iowa state highways are generally state-maintained. Iowa DOT use the standard cicle sign shield for its state highways. 24 X 24 inch or 36 X 36 inch signs are used for all state and U.S. Highways regardless of number of digits. Iowa uses the same system as North Carolina when it comes to font usage - instead of the circle getting bigger, the font of the numbers gets smaller as more digits are added. The table below describes font usage in the state. Interstate route signage follows Interstate marker standards - using wider shields for 3-digit routes. Font type for Interstate markers is type D - sized to fit the shield. All Iowa interstate shields include the state name on the shields. cite web | author=Iowa Department of Transportation | authorlink= Iowa Department of Transportation | title=Type 'A' Interstate Route Markers (Independent Use) | url=http://www.erl.dot.state.ia.us/Apr_2007/RS/content_eng/rd40.pdf | Work=Standard Road Plans | type=PDF | accessdate = 2007-06-04 ]Iowa state highways

Some routes list a city as a terminus. In these cases the ending is generally either at the corporate limits or center of the city.
County Highways
Iowa's
county highway s use the standard pentagon shield and are maintained by county governments. County roads are numbered with a statewide grid system using letters and numbers. County roads running primarily east and west assigned letters (from north to south) A through J. County roads running primarily north and south are assigned letters (from west to east) K through Z. The letters I, O, Q and U are not used to avoid confusion with numbers and other letters.References
