Alberto Abed Schekaiban

Alberto Abed Schekaiban is a Mexican businessman of Lebanese origin [ [http://www.noticias-oax.com.mx/articulos.php?id_sec=5&id_art=48449&id_ejemplar=1274 Abed is being investigated for money laundering] ] and the former owner of the extinct Mexican airline TAESA. He donated 200,000 pesos to the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) on December 11, 1999 [ [http://www.ife.org.mx/documentos/PPP/ppp/1999/consulta/aportaciones/pri-simp-efec-1999.pdf Control of cash receipts of the PRI for the year 1999] ] and the airline was declared bankrupt 72 days later on February 21, 2000.

The debt at the time was close to 400 million dollars, including 112 million dollars that were included in the Fobaproa (private debt was converted to public debt) and 80 million dollars owed to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Abed was briefly jailed in 2002 for tax evasion but was freed for lack of evidence. Abed was also the owner of SIASA with Jaime Ross Castillo who was found guilty of laundering money with the funds of the company and is jailed in Mexico since 2004.
