The school was founded in
1967 as part of a provincial initiative to create many such institutions to provide career-orienteddiploma andcertificate courses, as well ascontinuing education programs toOntario communities. The name of the college reflects the area's original settlement byUnited Empire Loyalist s.Originally operated out of a local high school, Loyalist College moved to its present 200 acre (0.8 km²) campus on Wallbridge-Loyalist Road in
1968 . The college operates a satellite campus inBancroft, Ontario and is associated withFirst Nations Technical Institute in the Tyendinaga Mohawk TerritoryIndian reserve .Academics

Loyalist College houses some of its students in the Loyalist College Residence located within a small walking distance of the college. The residence contains five buildings and holds approximately 500 students.
Located on residence grounds is Residence Commons. This building contains laundry facilities, computer access, head security office, food station and entertainment area. The entertainment area includes pool tables, and television for student use.
The school is also the site of accomidation and some training for the
