Peter John Squires (born
1 August 1951 ) is a first classcricket er who played in 49 first class matches forYorkshire County Cricket Club between1972 and1976 . Despite his healthy number of appearances this right handed opening batsman found runs hard to come by, scoring 1271 at just 16.72 with a best of 70. He was no more prolific in his 56 list A one day matches from 1971 to 1976, making 708 runs at 16.46 with a top score of 79 not out. The only ball he bowled in one day cricket went to the boundary and his 6.2 overs in first class cricket cost 32 runs without success. He played club cricket for Manningham Mills C.C.Squires was better known for his
rugby union , playing on the wing forRipon andHarrogate and 29 times for England in the 1970s, scoring a total of 6 tries, as well as playing for theBritish and Irish Lions on the1977 British Lions tour to New Zealand . He continued to play for Ripon into his early 40s. He played in England's famous 23 - 6 win overAustralia atTwickenham on January 3,1976 .He was born in Ripon, Yorkshire and was educated at
Ripon Grammar School andYork St John University . He is currently the Business Development Manager for the Caledonian brewery.References
