Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie was a 1980s and 1990s pop-rock band from Bathgate, near Edinburgh, Scotland. The classic line-up was Martin Metcalfe on vocals, John Duncan on guitar, Fin Wilson on bass guitar, Rona Scobie on Keyboards, Derek Kelly on drums and most notably, Shirley Manson as a keyboard player and background vocalist. The band came to prominence in the late 1980s after releasing two independent label singles, and were eventually signed to Capitol Records. An early track - 'Skimming Stones' - appears on the 1986 compilation cassette "Honey at the Core".The group was featured in the October 1987 issue of Scottish music, film and rock magazine "Cut", and so joined Danny Wilson, Hue and Cry and Deacon Blue in getting national acclaim.

However, after charting with their debut album release "Good Deeds & Dirty Rags" (UK number 26), Capitol records did not want to release their second 'proper' album "Hammer & Tongs", even after the album campaign had been launched with lead off singles (actually released on EMI's Parlophone imprint). In order to release this album anyway the band managed to acquire a deal with Radioactive Records .

Wilson, Kelly, Metcalfe and Manson formed Angelfish in 1993 in order to fulfill a contractual obligation to Radioactive Records. While Manson went off to perform with Garbage, Metcalfe, Kelly and Wilson continued to play intermittently throughout the 90's under names such as The Filthy Tongues and Fishhead.

A survey of Scottish music fans for Scottish listings magazine The List ranked Goodbye Mr Mackenzie as the 31st best Scottish band.

'Big' John Duncan, besides being a former member of The Exploited and Blood Uncles, performed as a guitarist at a number of Nirvana's later gigs. He appeared as Derek Clapton ("sic") in the Channel 4 comedy-drama "The Young Person's Guide To Becoming A Rock Star" and in the movie "American Cousins" as a Glesca Heavy.

Recent work

Derek Kelly, Fin Wilson and Martin Metcalfe formed a new band, Isa & the Filthy Tongues with American singer Stacey Chavis. They were named as the best unsigned band by Rob da Bank on BBC Radio 1 in April 2005, by Karmadownload.com and won best new band on Radio Scotland 3 weeks in a row. Their debut album "Addiction" was released on May 1 2006 on Circular Records.
