Lamplough Wallgate

Lamplough Wallgate

The delightfully named Lamplough Wallgate was a cricketer who played two first class matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, making his debut in 1875 and his second and final appearance in 1877. He was born on November 12th 1849 in Norton, Yorkshire and died, aged just 37, on May 9, 1887 in Harrogate, Yorkshire. He scored a grand total of 3 runs during his career and took 1 wicket for 17 with his round arm, right handed, bowling. He made his debut against MCC in a drawn end of season game at Scarborough in September 1885, opening the innings and scoring just 1 run in his only innings. Despite having 65 overs to achieve a target of 121, Yorkshire ended 47 short of their target.

His only appearance in the County Championship came almost 2 years later in August 1887 against Middlesex at Bramhall Lane in Sheffield. Wallgate fell for a duck in Yorkshire's 251 and the game was drawn before he had the chance to bat again.

Wallgate had also played in two matches for Yorkshire against Scotland at Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh in 1878. Batting at number 3 he scored 6 runs in Yorkshire's first innings of 195 and took a catch from the bowling of Emmett as Scotland were dismissed for 44 and, following on, 83 to hand the visitors an innings victory. As this match finished a day early a one day game was arranged which Scotland won after they passed Yorkshire's paltry 57, in which Lamplough Wallgate top scored with 14, the only score in double figures. Unusually Scotland batted on past the total, after the game was won, to finish on 110 for 7 in 84 overs.
