Three years later, he obtained his Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology, and was a postdoctoral associate in Yale University from 1989 to 1990.

During the fall of 2001, he co-led a student focus group responsible for exploring and providing feedback on the University's consideration of a branch campus of the Kenan-Flagler Business School in Qatar. He has also served as the director of the Morehead Planetarium.

Thorp's research is primarily focused on developing a new biological applications of transition metal redox chemistry.

Thorp is also an accomplished keyboardist and plays regularly with the group Equinox
