Sir Scrope Bernard-Morland, 4th Baronet (
1 October 1758 –18 April 1830 ) was a British politician.A younger son of
Sir Francis Bernard, 1st Baronet and Amelia Offley, he was born inPestel Amberg inNew Jersey as Scrope Bernard. He was educated atHarrow School inLondon andChrist Church, Oxford , where he graduated with aBachelor of Arts in 1779 and a Master of Arts in 1781. In 1788, he received additionally aDoctor of Civil Laws (DCL). He succeeded to his older brother'sbaronetcy in 1818.Bernard-Morland was Private Secretary to the
Viceroy of Ireland in 1782 and 1787. He was Secretary to theCommission of Enquiry into Public Offices in 1785 andGentleman Usher of the Black Rod inIreland in 1787. Between 1789 and 1803, he wasUnder-Secretary of State for the Home Department . Bernard-Morland wasMember of Parliament (MP) for Aylesbury from 1789 to 1806 and for St Mawes from 1806 to 1830. In May 1789, his name was changed to Scrope Bernard-Tyringham by Royal Licence and to Scrope Bernard-Morland in 1811. Admitted to theCollege of Advocates in London in November 1789, he became Judge of theEpiscopal Court of Durham in 1795. He died, aged 71 and was buried inKimble inBuckinghamshire .On
26 July 1785 , he married Hannah Morland, daughter of William Morland, atSt George's, Hanover Square , in London. They had four sons, including Francis Bernard-Morland and Thomas Bernard-Morland.References
