The USS "Europa" (AK-81) was an "Enceladus"-class
cargo ship that was built for theUnited States Navy duringWorld War II . The ship was named for Europa, the smallest of the Galilean moons of planetJupiter ."Europa" was laid down
2 March 1942 as MV "William Lester", a Maritime Commission type (N3-M-A1) hull, under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 464), at the Penn-Jersey Shipbuilding Company ofCamden, New Jersey . Assigned to the Navy as "Europa" (AK-81), she was launched7 December 1942 ; delivered to the Navy uncompleted24 November 1943 ; transferred to theUnited States Army Transportation Corps 25 November 1943 ; and commissioned USAT "Thomas F. Farrel Jr.", a port rehabilitation vessel."Thomas F. Farrel Jr." was scrapped in 1967 .
