Veritas Preparatory Academy (UMS)

Veritas Preparatory Academy is the first University-Model School opened in Florida. Founded in 2005 by President Rick Hermanns and the current administrator, Kira Wilson and located in Pinellas Park, FL; it currently has over 130 students in K-12th grade.

The St. Petersburg Times wrote an article [http://www.sptimes.com/2007/02/07/Neighborhoodtimes/Learning_as_a_family_.shtml] on the uniqueness of Veritas Preparatory Academy in Pinellas County and it was featured in the Neighborhood Times section by reporter Rita Farlow Published February 7, 2007. The article, titled "Learning as a family affair" documented the structure of the school and how parents are highly involved with their children's education.

Philosophy

Veritas is run on the philosophy of the National Association of University Model Schools (NAUMS), and focuses on parents being involved in their child's education. It accomplishes this objective by having a schedule of in-class lecturing at a central location two and a half days a week and letting the students complete their homework in a more homeschool-like environment for the other two days.
