The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (also IIIT-Hyderabad, IIIT-H) is an autonomous, self-supporting institution started in 1998 with seed support from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. IIIT is a research university, at its core. A major goal of IIIT is to impart a uniquely broad and interdisciplinary IT education of the highest academic quality. This is achieved through an integrated curriculum that consists of a highly diverse set of IT courses, interdisciplinary IT research projects, day-to-day interaction with industry, preparation in entrepreneurship and personality development courses.

Departments

The Institute lays emphasis on research at the undergraduate level. This is probably what makes it different from the other leading engineering institutes in India like the IITs. The Institute has highly focussed research centers in Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision/Computer Graphics, VLSI and Communication, Databases, Robotics, Information Retrieval and Algorithms. The Speech Processing lab in the Institute is one of only three of its kind present in India. Under the leadership of its director, Prof. Rajeev Sangal, the Institute takes pride in being one of the foremost research hubs in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Prof. Raj Reddy, a researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence and the only Indian to get an ACM Turing Award, is the chairman of the IIIT Board of Governors. The Institute combines the freedom of an academic institution with the strength of the corporate sector

Location

The institute is located in Gachibowli Hyderabad. It enjoys the locational advantage of being close to the HITEC City (a centre housing software development centres of companies like Microsoft, Oracle Corporation, Motorola, Infosys and GE Capital) and the presence of IT majors from across the globe right on the campus through their schools and research centres.

Academic Programs

The institute is a centre of learning for both under graduate and post graduate courses. The course pattern lays stress on research at both graduate and under graduate levels. The institute provides undergraduate programs in Computer Science and Electronics. Dual degree courses in either disciplines leading to a MS by Research degree are also present. Post graduate programs provided are Master of Technology, Master of Science(Research) and Master of Philosophy. PhD courses are also offered.

Admissions

Under Graduate Programs

Admissions are solely through AIEEE rank of the students.

Postgraduate Programs

Admissions are on the basis of Post-graduate Entrance Exam (PGEE) conducted by IIIT-H.

Campus

The Institute is situated on a campus of 62 acres (250,000 m²). It is fully residential in nature and hence is a self contained unit. There are 4 buildings that house the corporate schools and research centers. In addition to this, the academic building has the lecture halls, tutorial rooms, computer and electronics labs and offices of the administration and faculty.

All students are provided with individual hostel rooms. The Institute has a Guest House with four air conditioned suites. Two hostels for men and one for women have a total of about 1200 rooms. There is an optical fibre network connecting all buildings on campus including the hostels.

The Institute has well-equipped air-conditioned computer laboratories which are allocated batch-wise to students. The labs are equipped with modern hardware and software. The PC to students ratio is about 1:2. All computers are part of an intranet (1 Gbit/s Backbone). The Institute has high bandwidth (8 Mbit/s) Internet connectivity round the clock. Research students have 24 hours access to the computer facilities. The students administer their own computer systems. The research centres and corporate schools provide specialised equipment for research and development.

The entire campus boasts of wireless connectivity. Using 802.11g technology and multiple access points the entire campus is being converted into one giant hotspot.

Major Conferences

IIIT Hyderabad organised and co-sponsored IJCAI-07, the biggest international conference on Artificial Intelligence. It was held from 6th - 12th January, 2007.

Ranking

IIIT Hyderabad was ranked 7th among the top T-schools in India, in a recent survey by the DataQuest Magazine [http://dqindia.ciol.com/content/top_stories/2008/108060901.asp] .

Curriculum

IIIT Curriculum can be said to be one of the best out of the engineering colleges in India. Students have the independence of choosing the subjects they want to study from the second year onwards.Eminent members of the industry are regularly invited to teach at the institute. The classroom for many courses is a mix of under graduate students, post graduate students and working professionals registered for the course. Students in under graduate programs are required to study limited number of cross departmental subjects, which they can choose from a large selection. Thus improving their knowledge beyond the regular curriculum. Students in third year onwards are encouraged to work in one of the research labs, thus making them work aware, and thus helping them choose their future field of work.

Extra Curricular

tudents Parliament

The student representatives of each batch constitute the student parliament of IIIT, the student parliament is given powers by the administration to form laws regarding student life in IIIT. The constitution of the college has been drafted by the students parliament. It acts as a governing body for the students. Student issues are addressed to the administration through the parliament. It acts as an intermediary between students and the administration.

Felicity

Each year IIIT holds it's annual cultural and technical festival Felicity [http://felicity.iiit.ac.in] . Since its inception four years ago, Felicity has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most eagerly awaited college fests in Hyderabad. Felicity attracts students from all major engineering and degree colleges across the country.Renowned bands like Strings [http://www.stringsonline.net] , Parikrama [http://www.parikrama.com] , Motherjane [http://www.motherjaneindia.com] and Bombay Vikings have performed at Felicity over the past few years.

ports

The students are encouraged to engage in various co-curricular and extra curricular activities for their all round development. IIIT has a state of the art gymnasium and provides ample facilities for major sports such as Cricket, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Throwball, Table-tennis, Badminton and Athletics. Inter-house sporting competitions are held every year where the four houses, namely Aakash, Agni, Prithvi and Vayu vie for the honours.
