The area of the district was originally part of Mueang Surin district. It was split off as a separate district on March 4 1938, consisting of the seven "tambon" Kang Aen, Bakdai , Ta Bao, Prue, Thung Mon, Phlai and Thamo. The district is subdivided into 18 subdistricts ("
tambon "), which are further subdivided into 247 villages ("muban "). There are two townships ("thesaban tambon ") - Kang Aen covers parts of "tambon" Kang Aen, and Nikhon Prasat covers parts of "tambon" Prue. There are further 18 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).References
