:Created in the
Baronetage of the United Kingdom on13 May 1880 for Edward Bates. Sir Edward Bates was MP for Plymouth from 1871 to 1880 and from 1885 to 1892. Sir Percy Bates, the 4th Baronet, was Chairman of the Cunard Steam Ship Company andHigh Sheriff of Cheshire in 1920. He was also made a G.B.E. in 1920. Sir Geoffrey Bates, the 5th Baronet, wasHigh Sheriff ofFlintshire in 1969 and was decorated with an M.C in 1942.*
