Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Girinagar [B.V.M(G)] is a full-fledged Senior Secondary School (Std. I - XII) affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. It is a part of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, a group of India's premier educational institutions and is situated in Girinagar, Ernakulam(Cochin), Kerala.

History

Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Girinagar was founded in 1977 on convert|1.7|acre|m2 of land donated by the Cochin Shipyard in the Heart of Kochi City.The school functions under the purview of the Kochi Kendra of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which also includes BVM Elmakkara, BVM Eroor, Bhavan's Adarsha Vidyalaya and Bhavan's Newsprint Vidyalaya. The school has had only two principals: Mrs. Vijayalakshmi and the current principal, Mrs. Nirmala Venkateshwaran.

Magnum Opus

Magnum Opus (Latin for "great work") is the cultural fest of BVM, Girinagar. It is an inter-school contest involving many separate competitions. It is conducted annually by the students of the XIth standard.

Ideals and Principles

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan schools believe that there are elements in all cultures which transcend all barriers and knit people together. Its ideal is "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" which when translated to English mean "The world is one Family".

Culture is given strong emphasis and the students are taught to be modern and global in their outlook without forgetting their roots. True to its goal of revitalizing "Dharma" or Moral Law in its threefold aspects of Truth, Love and Beauty, the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan schools are ceaselessly striving to carry forward India's ageless message of Faith, Self-discipline and dedication.The main purpose of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan schools are to provide a modern bridge to span the past, the present and the future, built on the strong foundation of the fundamental values of life.

Bhavanites, as the students are popularly called, pride themselves on being Indian and are well known for their respect not only for the country and what it stands for but also towards themselves which,they consider an essential part of being "Indian".

School Motto

The motto of the school is "Aa no badraaha kartavyo yanthu vishwatahah" (Devanagari: _hi. आः नो भद्राः कर्तव्यो यन्तु विश्वतः) which translated to English mean "Let Noble thoughts come to us from every side"

The PEACE Programme

The school also has a yearly programme called the PEACE (Programme for Educational and Cultural Exchange) along with the students of Tunbridge Wells school, which is located in the Tunbridge Wells borough of the county Kent in the United Kingdom. This is an exchange programme in which 30 students and 5 teachers are hosted by students and teachers of one of the member schools for approximately 20 days for one academic year; the next year, the students and teachers who hosted during the previous year travel to be hosted by those who visited them the previous year. In the 2007-08 academic year, students travelled from BVM, Girinagar to Kent from June 25th to July 15th
