Running economy

Running economy

Running Economy (RE) is a measure in distance running that has been shown to be a superior and valid predictor of performance. It is therefore important for athletes who want to improve their running economy through changes in training. The literature relating to RE is vast and the determinants of RE supported by empirical data.

RE is a stronger correlate of performance than maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) in trained runners with the same values (Saunders, 2004).

Definition

Running economy is deemed as the energy required running submaximally at a given velocity. It is expressed as the amount of oxygen consumed (ml/kg/min), or expressed as the rate of oxygen consumption per distance covered (ml/kg/km). Those who are able to consume less oxygen while running at a given velocity are said to have a better running economy. Determination of running economy is by measuring oxygen consumption at a steady state within one’s aerobic range, whilst taking body mass into consideration.
