- Reactive mind
The reactive mind is a concept in the
Dianetics andScientology systems ofL. Ron Hubbard , referring to that portion of thehuman mind that isunconscious and stimulus-response, [L. Ron Hubbard "Science of Survival", p. 418, Bridge Publications Inc., 2007 (1st ed. 1951) ISBN 978-1-4031-4485-0] which Hubbard blamed for most mental and physical ailments. These ailments are regarded by Scientologists aspsychosomatic ones:"What can it do? It can give a man arthritis, bursitis, asthma, allergies, sinusitis, coronary trouble, high blood pressure and so on, down the whole catalog of psychosomatic ills, adding a few more which were never specifically classified as psychosomatic, such as the
common cold ." - L. Ron Hubbard ("", 1999 paperback edition, pg.69)Despite the lack of scientific basis for his claims, [
Martin Gardner "Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science ", ch. 22, Dover Publications Inc., I957 ISBN-10: 0486203948 ] Hubbard maintained, "These are scientific facts. They compare invariably with observed experience. The reactive mind is the entire source of aberration. It can be proved and has been repeatedly proven...." [ [http://tuberose.com/What_is_the_Reactive_Mind.html "What is the Reactive Mind?" by L. Ron Hubbard] , hosted on www.tuberose.com] Today, theChurch of Scientology still maintains the importance of doing away with this portion of one's mind, and that only Dianetics can achieve this. It's the only thing that does." - Scientology's website for Bridge Publications [http://www.bridgepub.com/index.vm]
Hubbard's book "" claimed that the Reactive Mind stores exact impressions (which he called engrams) of past events, which occurred while the person was unconscious or otherwise not completely aware. The common element in these recordings are pain and unconsciousness, which then act to cross associate and cross wire the incidents involved in the mind. [L. Ron Hubbard "The Vocabularies of Science", Ability the magazine of Dianetics and Scientology, Issue 36, mid-October 1956.]
Scientology andDianetics use agalvanic skin response detector [ [http://www.trans4mind.com/transformation/gsr.htm The Biofeedback Monitor] ] called anE-meter originally designed byVolney Mathison that is basically aWheatstone bridge designed to help the work of erasing one's own engrams and in the end, supposedly erasing one's own reactive mind altogether, by measuring the changes in resistance experienced by a living organism e. g. ahumanoid . [Bent Corydon "L. Ron Hubbard, Messiah or Madman?", p. 439, Barricade Books Inc., 1992 ISBN 0-942837-57-7: E-meter could be used as aThought Police interrogation device.] This is done through a series of sessions called Auditing.According to
The Sunday Times Biology Oxford Prof.Richard Dawkins states Scientology purports to use scientific tools such as its controversial E-Meter [ [http://www.lermanet.com/case2.htm The E-Meter Papers] ] to augment the "gullibiligy" of this already "gullible age".
