Anne Brewis

Anne Brewis

Lady Anne Brewis [ Obituary, The Times, Friday April 12th 2002.] , daughter of Roundell Cecil Palmer, 3rd Earl of Selborne, was an English botanist. As a child, Brewis had spent long holidays studying the orchids on Noar Hill [ In retirement, Brewis was a warden at this nature reserve for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust ] , near Selborne. This led her to study the works of Gilbert White, and eventually to a degree in Zoology at Somerville College, Oxford. Marriage took her to many localities before returning to Hampshire on her husband's [ see Rev John Salisbury Brewis, (Who's Who 1970 p366- ISBN 0 7136 1140 5) ] retirement. Over the next 27 years she would meticulously catalogue hundreds of species [http://www.hants.gov.uk/museum/biology/plants/vascular.html] , give freely of her time to whoever was interested [ For example, every summer she would organise botanical safaris for local children: Matthew Eyre, member H&IOW WT ] and co-author the definitive guide to Hampshire's plantlife ( Bowman, Brewis et al, 1996).
