- Bruce Olson
Bruce Olson is a
Scandinavian American Christian missionary who traveled to the jungles ofSouth America at the age of nineteen. What differentiates him from many of the other missionaries of his time was that rather than "
Westernizing " or "Americanizing " the indigenousMotilone Bari , he made a concerted effort to become a part of the indigenous tribe.Olson wrote the autobiography "
Bruchko " about his experiences in South America.Previous to meeting the
Motilone Bari , he also worked with another indigenous tribe, theYuko sIn 2001, Bruce Olson, for the first time in 20 years, left the jungle to visit churches in Europe who had been asking him for years to come and visit with them. He described his first time going to a bistro in downtown Munich. "They asked me what I wanted to drink" he said "and I didn't know what to say. One person asked, 'how about Orange juice?' I exclaimed 'They have orange juice!?'" Being in the jungles in South America was where Mr. Olson had been called to, and he answered that call. So few of us know what it is like to forget the comfort that we live in an experience everyday. Hearing and meeting Bruce Olson is a great privileged for anyone. When one stands in his presence, it is like seeing a real life super hero.Bruce Olson speaks at least 16 languages, including several tribal tongues. He was never married.References
