Heinrich Werner (
May 14 ,1874 – 1946) was a German physician who was born inMühlhausen , Saxony. He studied medicine at theKaiser Wilhelm Academy inBerlin , and later became a military medical officer in the German colonies ofGerman East Africa ,German Southwest Africa (1904-1906) andKamerun (1914). During this time period he was also a medical clinician inHamburg (1906-1913). DuringWorld War I he was an armyhygienist inBelgium , Romania and Russia. After the war, he practiced medicine in Berlin as a specialist of infectious diseases.Werner is remembered for his description of
trench fever during an outbreak of the disease during World War I. Along with Swissanatomist Wilhelm His Jr , who also described trench fever, the disorder is sometimes referred to as "Werner-His disease". This malady was caused by the parasite "Rickettsia quintana". Werner also published several articles on tropical and parasitical diseases.Written Works
