Niederwenigern is a small borough of the City of Hattingen in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is about 15 minutes by car from the center of Hattingen along the Ruhr River but closer (about 5 minutes) to Kupferdreh a part of the town Essen. The population is about 6,000 and before 1970, it was independent. Niederwenigern has a Roman Catholic church, a local landmark, St. Mauritius Cathedral. There is also a Lutheran-Evangelical Protestant church, the faith of most Protestant Christians in Germany. There is also the Nikolaus-Groß-Museum..
Niederwenigern itself has a smaller subpart, called Dumberg. Best known for its horse riding club, Dumberg is a rural hamlet actually bordering on the City of Essen. There are a lot of other horse riding opportunities in Niederwenigern and the surrounding villages.
Regarding the infrastructure Niederwenigern has got 2 kindergartens, 2 primary schools, some smaller shops for daily needs like a Schlecker store and a REWE market.Except some typical local pubs, Niederwenigern does not provide lots of entertaining facilities. Famous is the yearly "Mauritius Kirmes", a typical small fun fair celebrated at the end of September in relation to the saint's day of [St.Mauritius]. It's popularity is founded in the fact that a lot of (former) residents come back to Niederwenigern at this weekend to meet old friends. The fair lasts 3 days (Saturday through Monday).
Other things to do is sporting in one of the sports clubs, namely Sportfreunde Niederwenigern (Football, badminton, aerobics, volleyball) and VfL Niederwenigern (Tennis, swimming, athletics, table tennis). Or you ride your bike on the several biketrails along the Ruhr river. On those, you can go far: All the way down the Ruhr river and even to the Rhine river.
