John Brendan McCormack

John Brendan McCormack

John Brendan McCormack (born August 12, 1935) is the head Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester, New Hampshire. He was installed as the ninth bishop of Manchester on September 21, 1998.

Involvement in Roman Catholic sex abuse cases

While assigned to the Archdiocese of Boston as a chief aide to Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, McCormack aided in the concealment of child molestation by priests under his jurisdiction in the diocese, writing conciliatory letters to priests accused of pedophilia and writing letters to accusers urging them not to bring their accusations public. Since the scandal unfolded, McCormack has been slow to participate with lay prosecutors and with his congregation in both uncovering old abuses and installing new practices for finding and removing predatory priests.
