Holt Bridge, also called Holt Fleet Bridge, is a
cast iron arch bridge over theRiver Severn , at Holt inWorcestershire ,England , with a span of 150 feet/46 m. It was designed byThomas Telford , and opened in 1828. [Cragg, R., "Civil Engineering Heritage - Wales and West Central England", Thomas Telford Publishing, 1997] It is Grade II listed, unlike Telford's very similarGalton Bridge , which is rated more highly, at Grade I, and spans his canal atSmethwick .The bridge was built with five cast iron ribs, with X-braced
spandrel s, as were several of Telford's bridges. It was strengthened in 1928 [ [http://brantacan.co.uk/telford1.htm#HF Thomas Telford's Bridges Over the River Severn] ] . The upper and lower parts of each rib were encased in concrete, as were some of the diagonal struts above them. The road deck was rebuilt inreinforced concrete and widened at the same time.Semicircular arches at each end, built in red
sandstone , allow for the passage of riverbank foot-traffic and floodwater.References
