The HRHS environmental club belongs to Roots and Shoots, a program offered by the Jane Goodall Institute. The club has been active for many years, although not only at HRHS. The club was started by Mrs. Coleen Carter when she was working at RVR High School. When she came to teach at the new Heritage Regional High School (it had been renamed from MacDonald Cartier High School), the environmental club followed along.
In the last few years, they have raised several hundred dollars for various charities, adopted a whale, owl and chimpanzee and a polar bear, collected over 2000 old prescription eyeglasses and over 200 pounds of plastic and aluminum tabs for recycling!
They take on all sorts of projects, although mainly ones concerning care for the environment, care for animals and also community service.
Recently, Heritage has been awarded with the Earth School status by the Green Schools Program and was the first school to receive it in the province of Quebec.
Sports
During the beginning of MCHS, the development of the sports facilities have been a major achievement of their school. Over the past years, HRHS have partnered up in association with the city of Saint-Hubert and the Riverside School-board to built the most advance and state of the art sports facilities offered by school’s all over Quebec. Envied by CEGEPS and even some Universities, their school provides numerous sports teams to all of the athletes in our school. During the fast decade, HRHS has broadened facilities by adding a astroturf on our football and soccer fields. Since the beginning of MCHS, the school created an indoor pool, hockey arena, football fields, several soccer fields, tracks, and top of the line sports equipment for all the athletes. With a Sport Etude program ready to be unveiled to top student athletes and a indoor soccer arena under wraps, Heritage is on its way to becoming one of the schools with the top sports department in the province. Since the start of the school, they have turned from 1-2 soccer teams and a single field hockey to now half a dozen soccer squads along with numerous basketball, volleyball, badminton and many more sports teams. Macdonald Cartier and Heritage Regional holds one of the most prestigious history off all school sports department. With countless banners and championships, they consider to have one of the most advance sporting departments in the region. The school holds hundreds of local and regional championships and dozens of provincial wins under our belt, we strive to continue the school success with the help of our new and youthful coaching staff.
MacDonald-Cartier High School
Macdonald-Cartier High School, or MacDonald-Cartier Memorial High School opened in 1968, and at its peak enrollment during the late 1970s had over 5000 students. With the declining English population of the area, school enrollment declined and in 2003 the school merged with Richelieu Valley Regional High School to become Heritage Regional High School.
