Fernando Lembo di Pino

Fernando Lembo di Pino

fernando lembo di Pino - scribe, calligrapher, painter, was born in 1953 on the Amalfi Coast (Italy), true heart of the Mediterranean area, where he lives and works, although in a rather different domain, as he actually is a teacher of linguistics and philosophy.

gabbiano (“seagull”, as he is generally known and called - or "nightgull", "hermit gull": [http://yorukamome.livejournal.com/2005/06/28/ yorukamome] , 「夜かもめ」 ・「鴎庵先生」 "ou an sensei", being this last one the name he's been "baptized" with by his Japanese haiku Masters and poets Mrs. Kazuyo Shindo「進藤多代先生」and Mr. Sakuo Nakamura 「中村作雄先生」) has for about forty years been painting, drawing and designing; numerous worthy exhibitions of his work were often displayed and could be seen in cities and centers of art both in Italy and foreign countries: in his earlier years of activity, mainly paintings and drawings, but also considerable collaborations in theatre and events' scenographies, cartoons and comics, appreciated collections of couture, jewellery and design.

by crossing these paths, he treasured and grew more and more into himself a specific interest in the written Word and the cohabitation of this with the image. it was therefore easy to step into calligraphy and illumination fields, where these two expressive lines coincide since centuries in a perfect balance of arts and moods - a choice that took him to be added after his remarkable [http://yorukamome.livejournal.com/2007/01/20/ works] to the selective number of important "hands" in calligraphy domains, both [http://yorukamome.livejournal.com/2007/02/14/ western] and [http://yorukamome.livejournal.com/2008/01/13/ eastern] : see also some of his [http://yorukamome.livejournal.com/2008/01/09/ 書道 pages] .

his whole scribe's and illuminator's production is collected since the latest years of XXth century under the signature [http://yorukamome.livejournal.com/2005/08/30/ nova scriptoria - gabbiano] . gabbiano is a Lay Member of the London Society of Scribes and Illuminators ( [http://www.calligraphyonline.org/ SSI] ) where some of his best works can be seen since 2003 on the Lay Members' Day exhibition (SSI events' pages), and is counted among the Maîtres of the “Société des Calligraphes d’Europe”.

tyle

highly interested in both verbal and visual forms of Art and Communication, as a painter gabbiano began to create his original works by mixing the magic and the mood of scenes and views from the farest countries he had visited all around the world with the softest images and colours of his Mediterranean geographies: a strongly personal fusion giving birth to a sort of arcane visions, the "unexisting landscapes", basic theme and leit-motiv of his previous pictorial job.

he always seriously considered himself "an eternal self taught apprentice", only a student avidly observing artists, artisans and crafters - and trying to use of their skills and techniques when melting together all his experiences, in the attempt to reach an unusually unique constructive and creative ability, to produce a truly exclusive piece of work; within this target, the wish to similarly use materials and utensils of unbelievable peculiarity - objects that he himself generally creates or “re-produces”, stubbornly aimed to achieve the creation of wholly original and personal "things".

whether working and studying with a medieval insular parchment, a Japanese juugou or the page of a XVI century missal, he always feels aimed to learn the most ancient handicraft techniques tied to the objects of writing: papers and vellum, natural inks and terræ colours, quills and nibs, metal gildings, as well as the arts of miniature and binding; a minute historical search and a constant wish of respect to the hand cleverness with which every single work he studies was originally created, as well as to the style and the Age he has chosen for that single piece.

he literally "dives" therefore into the same styles and techniques to realise a new work, by the time "mosaicized" matching together all these items, studies and experiences - new "folio", but at all original itself, never a copy neither a re-visitation: briefly, a newborn object "maîtrised” in a totally similar way as an author of other times and countries by repeating and reproposing the same creative and constructive ancient paths.
