When they get lost they are recognizable as common form oflitter [Cite web |url=http://www.bec-cave.org.uk/content/view/505/32/1/9/ |publihser=Bristol exploration Club |title=Ten Go Caving In Sutherland |year=1992 |author=Peter Glanville] . They can also come in handy in the case of an accident for holding injured joints very tightly in place [Cite web |url=http://www.gregbrock.co.uk/content/view/324/68/ |title=04-Aug-01: Hirlatz Hohle |author=Greg Brock] .The origin is unknown. The name probably comes from the fact that they are black and dangly like Snoopy's ears, and the words rhyme.
