The Student Yachting World Cup
SYWoC stands for Student Yachting World Cup. It is a yearly sailing competition organized by students at the Ecole Polytechnique, a French engineering school, seeing the world's best student sailing teams confront each other in a week-long series of races.
In 2006 and 2007, more than 12 countries participated, including Japan, Portugal, Italy, USA, England, Scotland, Germany...
History
The Student Yachting World Cup (former Course de l'Europe) has been organized since 1979 by students at the Ecole Polytechnique. Each year, the best sailing teams from universities all around the world meet and compete in thrilling yacht races.
When the race was created in 1979, only a few European countries participated. Other teams have joined in, from Eastern Europe, Japan, the United States or Australia, thus making it a real World Cup.
Every year, th SYWoC takes place in a large French harbour (earlier editions have taken place in Lorient, Royan, Marseilles, La Trinité, Toulon ...), around All Saints' day.
The 2006 Edition took place in Lorient, France, from 28 October to 4 November. 13 teams participated, and after a week of thrilling races, and as memorable parties, Ireland, with its Trinity College of Dublin team, won.
The 2007 Edition took place from 27 October to 3 November 2007 in the port of
La Rochelle , France. The team of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (Switzerland) won after one week of races.YWoC 2008
